The Day Lucy Chose Us

Years ago — before marriage, before children — I had big Italian breeds: Maremmano and Cane Corso. Strong, protective, magnificient dogs.

Then life shifted. Family grew. Schedules filled. And for a long time, there were no dogs in the house.

Still, I couldn’t resist smiling at puppy photos or adoptions add online, appreciating the cuteness.

One add caught my attention: a striking merle boy named Nathaniel. Beautiful. Confident. Impossible to resist.

On an impulse, I got my husband and one child, we drove 5 hours to the farm to pick up the big, flashy boy.  In person Nathaniel was even better: stunning, dramatic, photogenic. Basically the supermodel of the litter.

While I was trying very hard to bond with the impressive one, the smallest black and white one quietly parked herself at my husband’s feet. Calm. Patient. Just chilling.

When I picked her up, she melted into my lap perfectly content.

But I had pretty much decided on Nathaniel, so Lucy was picked up and placed back in the kennel with her siblings. All the time I kept watching her. I’m not even sure why — I had already made my choice.

Inside the kennel, one of the bigger puppies nudged her aside, and she let out a small yelp. Nothing dramatic. Just the natural order of a litter.

But sometign shifted in me: she was coming home!

On the drive home, the excitement faded and I felt a wave of fear — had I just made a mistake?

I had reacted to an impulse, I had walked in convinced about one dog and walked out with another. If my certainty shifted so quickly, could I really trust my judgment? Was this the wrong time for a dog? At 50, life is busy in new ways — growing work demands, kids nearing independence, and a house on the verge of change.

        — Even as I questioned myself, Lucy had been certain all along.

Before Lucy, dogs belonged to another chapter of my life.
